| Black cod dumplings and braised chicken feet |
 |
| Plum Valley crispy roast chicken |
Plum Valley is an upmarket
Chinese restaurant in Soho. By that I mean there are no ducks hanging in the
window, the service is helpful and friendly and it is night club dark and
minimalistic. There is often a queue although due to some random eating times I
haven't been caught in it. The Dim Sum is wonderful. As a general point we got
recommendations of what to order from a friend of my sisters and it was all
excellent.
So firstly chicken feet braised
in black bean. I had never eaten them or considered them before this. Really
delicious; tender, sinewy, moreish, I was in competition with myself to suck
every last bit off. If you cannot bear the idea of chicken feet and they do
look a bit 'feety' then maybe it is not for you. The steamed black cod dumpling
with crap roe, Japanese seaweed and chives was stand out delicious; perfectly
cooked with great texture and flavour, as was the coriander crab meat crystal
ball. The crispy bean curd with prawns was great too as was the cheung fun
version, although a bit dense.
From the main menu the baby pak
choi with garlic was a good side dish, simple and fresh with a nice bite to the pak
choi. I wanted to try the version in black cod stock with goji berries
but they had run out of the stock unfortunately. Crispy deboned roasted chicken
with spring onion sauce was excellent; the chicken tender and the skin salty
and crispy. Beef rendang was melt in the mouth tender and flavourful. The stir fried hand
pulled noodle with Shimeji mushroom made a good side dish.
The main menu is a lot more
expensive than the Dim Sum menu, which is very reasonably priced. Athough all the dishes were of good quality
the Dim Sum menu has the edge. That with a few supporting dishes from the main menu make for a great dinner if you are ever in the Soho area.
